Project Description
Construction of steel framed two storey Church with stone brick and block cavity wall envelope and concrete raft.
Full internal fit out including under floor heating.
External works including car-park and small retaining wall.
Challenges
During the excavation works a network of tunnels were discovered.
They were first thought to be the cellars to the former Library. However, they were found to be the Second World War air-raid shelters for the adjacent school.
Birdwell resident Muriel Trigg attended the school during the war. "The tunnels were not very nice, but the war was a scary time. The tunnels were quite a fair size because the whole school and teachers would go down there".
After extensive discussion on site with the Structural Engineers, sadly the tunnels had to be filled in to maintain the integrity of the new concrete raft foundation.
Design Award
The Scheme was awarded a Special Mention Award at the BMBC Design and Site Stewardship Awards 2003/04. (See Certificate attached)
