Hungerhill School Entrance Reception - Construction of entrance and infill of quadrangle
Client: Hungerhill School
Consultant Design: John Hills Associates
Start Date: June 2008
Completion Date: September 2008
Value: £280,000
Project
Works included the construction of a steel framed extension with cladded curtain walling and aluminium electric sliding doors, to form a new Entrance and Reception.
An internal quadrangle was in-filled to allow us to create classroom space on what had previously been under utilized external seating areas.
Challenges
Maintaining safe use of the school whilst demolishing the existing entrance was a major obstacle. Careful programming was implemented and the breakthroughs and work to all existing adjacent Main Office and reception was programmed to be carried out during the six week summer school holidays.
Construction of the Quadrangle infill due to its location in the centre of the school was also a problem. A safe route through the corridors was used to gain entry for the mini excavator. Small dumpers were then used to remove all the spoil from the excavations.
Adjacent areas affected by the works were very carefully programmed and school holidays and inset day were utilised to minimise the impact on school activities.
