Project Description

The main body of work comprised of:

  • Construction of a steel frame, two storey Atrium with glazed roof and curtain walling envelope.
  • Extension, alterations and refurbishment of the existing Town Hall to form Offices.
  • Complete internal fit out including new Mechanical and Electrical installations, decoration and floor coverings.
  • Construction of ramp and level access.

Challenges

The original tender was over budget.  After extensive negotiations with the Architect, Q.S., Services Engineers and the Client, substantial savings were made to bring it inside the budget.

There were major issues with interfacing the Atrium roof and curtain walling with the old stone built Town Hall building.

With careful investigation, detailing and measurement a good solution was achieved.

The timber cladding on the existing building was stripped, the framework treated and repaired, and Eternit cladding installed. The floor was constructed using a suspended concrete detail, consisting of a 1mm metal permanent shuttering system.

The result was this very colourful, striking building facade. The steel atrium can be seen on the left.

“The building is a great mix of the old and new. In some buildings the mix just doesn’t work. However, here at Stocksbridge Town Hall, the mix is just right and has created a very impressive building. The workmanship that has gone into this project is first class. All materials are of top quality and the workmanship of the highest standard”.
