Project Description

The project was divided into two areas, the first was the extension to the existing fitness suite consists of a steel frame with brick and block cavity walls, concrete floor slab, steel cladded roof and aluminium windows surrounded by a perimeter of tarmacadam paving and gabion basket retaining walls. The second area was the re-roofing works to the linking Streets between the main blocks to create contemporary access corridors.

The original gymnasium was situated adjacent to a steep banking. In order to construct the extension, mass excavation had to be carried out and gabion walls constructed to retain the earth. The extension which was more than double the size of the fitness suite was carried out whilst maintaining full use of the existing facility.

The second element of the project involved the removal of the existing roof structures to the college streets and installation of new roof structures with coverings including new curtain walling.

In order to keep the building watertight , large scaffolds were erected to provide a water proof tent enabling works to be carried out inside.
