Refurbishment and Re-modelling
of Merlin Theatre, Sheffield

Full refurbishment and remodelling of existing theatre whilst considering a conservation area. Asbestos removal was undertaken throughout the site.

Construction work was carried out over 2 phases. Phase 1 consisted of enveloping works incorporating re-roofing, external walkways and window replacement. Phase 2 incorporated a full internal fit-out with new flooring throughout, platform lift in the foyer and new plastering and decoration throughout.

Challenges

The biggest obstacle was works to the Auditorium which is an unusual shaped room and has a very high soffit. This was overcome with ‘bird change scaffolding’ for access to the ceiling. Access to site was challenging due to the narrow and steep track down to site. All deliveries were pre-booked on smaller rigid vehicles to gain access. Fitting the complicated cantilever staircase and walk way around the building was undertaken by precise measuring and setting out by the Site Manager to ensure the staircase seated parallel with the building.

O&P Construction Services Ltd has donated ten theatre seats to the Trust to assist them in completing the works and open the theatre in April 2016.
