Project Description

The construction of an extension to the front of the school to form new foundation facilities. This also involved breaking through existing walls to link the existing and the new. The foundation unit included new toilets and kitchen. Works also included creating kitchen space in the existing school, to enable after school cooking clubs. The general refurbishment of a number of classrooms was included. A new road was constructed to link an existing rear car-park to the entrance to the school, to enable safe access for children and visiting parents. A new children’s play area was also created to the front of the foundation unit, which was fenced to keep the children safe.

Challenges

The school wanted to link two classrooms, to create a large space for young children to play. This involved breaking out three opening between two classrooms. One large one, the size of a double door opening, to enable teachers to see through, and give visible coverage to the extent of the area. Two small openings were also created. One square opening and one triangle. The school wanted the children to experience being able to crawl between rooms, literally by going through the wall. O&P Construction decided to make one of the openings a 3D experience for the children, so created extensive framing and support to make this possible. The tunnel was carpeted to match the floor covering, and painted to match the walls. This was done free of charge as a surprise for the children, and it has gone down a storm. The tunnel is often used by the children, as a secret passage to reach the pirates cave.
