Project Description

Extension to the existing upper and lower lodges at Wathwood Hospital patient & staff facilities.  The works comprises a new two storey block of traditional construction, minor alterations to existing units, demolition of entrance lobbies to existing units, associated external works and drainage and formation of additional parking bays.

The main hospital complex is a 24hour facility which accommodates psychiatric patients together with offices and this remained in full use throughout the contract period.  The site for the Lodge is located part-way along the access road away from the main complex.

The entire building had to be an extremely robust construction due to the demands that the patients will put upon it. Quality is always a priority on O&P Construction Services projects but an even tighter than normal checking regime was put in place to ensure every stage of construction was to spec and the highest standard to ensure the security of the building was maintained and that staff and patients have a safe environment.
Many security measures were installed and the specified products in patient areas were all anti-ligature designed.
O&P worked closely with the Project Architect and specialist subcontractors to agree an approved method of constructing the tight curves of the main and canopy roof designs.
The curve could not be achieved by the use of roof slates alone due to laps on tiles so a secondary liquid plastic membrane was applied to curved plywood below the slates to guarantee the water integrity of the roof.
